In our previous sermon series (Jesus: Lord of All) we talked about the crucifixion of Jesus. We asked the “Why?” question.
- When Jesus struggled in prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, why didn’t he get up and leave before the soldiers came to arrest him?
- In the fake trials, why didn’t he speak up and defend himself?
- Why did he allow the Roman soldiers to beat him and then nail him to a wooden cross?
The one word answer is “Atonement.” God the Father had Jesus, the sinless Son of God, die on the cross so that we might have our sins atoned for. Jesus’ death paid off our sin debt. We have been set free from the debt that we owe God. We are forgiven!
As we focus on Jesus’ resurrection, let me ask the next “Why?” question. Why is atonement so important to God? Why would God design a plan where we would be treated graciously when we deserve punishment?
The one word answer is “Love.”
For God so loved…
