Cain and Abel

What made Abel’s offering to the Lord so much better than Cain’s offering? Cain brought what he had to bring, while Abel brought the best portions of what he wanted to bring. This is our first hint at the condition of Cain’s heart toward God.

Sermon preached on September 1, 2019.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:

  • What was the difference in the brother’s offerings? Read Hebrews 11:4. How did Abel demonstrate faith in his offering?
  • In verse 9 when God asked for Abel, Cain responded by saying “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” Why do you think Cain responded this way? What’s your immediate reaction when your dark acts are called to light?
  • In what areas of your life do you struggle with jealousy or being envious of others?
  • What is the difference in God’s response to Cain’s offering (verse 6) versus God’s response to Cain’s killing of Abel (verses 11-12)? How could Cain have changed the narrative of his story?

YOUR CALL TO ACTION:

  • Read 1 John 3:11-12. This week let’s make an effort to go out of our way to demonstrate an act of love to someone in our family.
