The three most common responses to the death of a loved one are abandonment, anguish and despair. Other emotions were certainly experienced during (and immediately after) the crucifixion. When the Sabbath had passed and Mary Magdalene came to the tomb of Jesus and saw that it was empty, she immediately went and told the disciples.
When the disciples returned to their homes, she stood outside the tomb and wept — from grief, despair and hopelessness.
When Jesus appeared to her, she wasn’t thinking resurrection. Her heart was too broken to recognize who stood before her, but when Jesus spoke her name, she saw him. She recognized her resurrected Lord and her hope (and ours) was resurrected, too.
