The Prodigal Son (part 2)

  • The older brother’s heart says, “I’m for me.”
  • The father’s heart says, “I’m for the kingdom.”

Jesus’ heart is for lost people. He wants us to go after our One and celebrate with them when they are “found.”

Digging Deeper

Want to get a little deeper into the study? Below are some questions and thoughts to consider based on the sermon message. Feel free to work through them on your own, as a family or in your small group. (Discussion questions for elementary-age kids can be found below.) If you have questions, please contact us.

Discussion Questions:

  • Why do you think Jesus told these three parables found in Luke 15? What is special about each one?
  • Why did the older brother react the way he did? How does the older brother relate to the Pharisees and the teachers of the law in verse 2?
  • What stands out to you specifically in the response of the older brother to his father? Why is it sometimes easy to drift into a ME mentality in our Christian journey?
  • Why was there a celebration? What does that reveal to you about the heart of Jesus? How should we adopt this same attitude?
  • In each of the three parables, there was a celebration when what was lost was found. Why do you think Jesus emphasized this three times? What does it look like to celebrate as a Christian?
  • This week reflect on this question, am I in the party or am I sitting outside on the steps refusing to go in?
