Digging Deeper

Want to get a little deeper into the study? Below are some questions and thoughts to consider based on the sermon message. Feel free to work through them on your own, as a family or in your small group. (Discussion questions for elementary-age kids can be found below.) If you have questions, please contact us.

Discussion Questions:

  • In Matthew 28:1 it says that Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. Why do you think they went to look at the tomb and how is this similar or different to visiting a graveside today? For further discussion, read Mark 16:1-8, Luke 24:1-10, and John 20:1-8. What are the similarities and differences?
  • What emotions would the women have had when they felt the earthquake and saw the angel sitting on the rolled stone? Why were the women able to stand there while this happened, but the guards were so afraid they “became like dead men?”
  • The angel told the women “He has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.” Why do you think the angel wanted the women to see the empty tomb? Wouldn’t the presence of an angel be enough for the women to believe? Why did the angel give the affirmation, “just as he said” referring to Jesus’ earthly prediction of a resurrection?
  • How did the women respond to the angel’s message? When have you ever been afraid yet also filled with joy?
  • The angel gave the encouragement to the women, “He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you …” What would this message have meant to the women? What does it mean to you, Jesus is risen and is going ahead of you?
  • How did the women respond when Jesus appeared to them? How would you have responded? Why did Jesus appear to the women?
