Project Description

Rule Breaker

On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Matthew 9:12-13)

Mercy is the greatest gift you can receive but it can be the most costly to give.

Sermon preached on August 9, 2020.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:
  • Matthew worked along the Sea of Galilee. Leading up to this encounter, what do you think he thought of Jesus? What are some things he might have witnessed Jesus do?
  • Why do you think Jesus said to Matthew “follow me?” Why do you think Jesus went to Matthew’s house to eat?
  • Of all the characters mentioned, (the pharisees, the disciples, Jesus, Matthew, Matthew’s friends) where do you find yourself in this event?
  • Why do you think Jesus responded the way he did to the Pharisees? What was the message he was trying to get across to them? How do we apply this message today?
YOUR CALL TO ACTION:
  • How do I need to be more merciful?
