The Magi: Determined to Worship the Christ Child

We conclude our sermon series, “Perfect Light,” with a focus on ‘Wisdom’ — specifically, the wisdom of the Magi. Most popularly known in the song, “We Three Kings,” by John Henry Hopkins Jr., the Magi were likely astronomers from far beyond the eastern borders of Israel, possibly from modern day Iraq (or more specifically, Babylon).

What most people don’t realize is that the Magi were Gentiles. They traveled long and far, bearing expensive gifts and raising a major fuss when they finally arrived in Jerusalem. This leads one to wonder two simple questions, “Why would non-Jewish people travel so far to worship the newborn King?” and “How did they know what to look for?”

Sermon preached on December 30, 2018.
